On May 24, we celebrate Our Lady Help of Christians, the patroness of the Sisters of Bon Secours. This year marks the 138th anniversary of our sisters arriving to the US from France. The sisters’ arrival to America came about when an American couple was on their honeymoon in Paris and the bride fell ill. An English-speaking Sister of Bon Secours nursed her back to health, and the couple was deeply impressed by the Sisters compassionate care. Baltimore Archbishop Gibbons got involved, and asked the Sisters to come to Baltimore to nurse the sick in their homes.
Our prayer today:
Holy Mary, Help of Christians, how good it is to come to you, imploring your constant and loving help. As mothers always remember and care for their children, you, holy mother, remember and care for us. Grant to us your consolation and presence and help, in every sorrow and in every joy. We ask for your loving help, too, for all who are now suffering. Help the weak, cure the sick, comfort all in need. Our Lady, Help of Christians, pray for us. Amen.
