Change the Culture: Advocacy and Education

Gun violence is a serious public health epidemic, and Maryland is a leader in reducing deaths from gun violence. Maryland has implemented several gun control measures, including universal background checks, handgun purchase permits, extreme risk protection orders, and bans on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines. In 2024, Baltimore witnessed a 23% reduction in homicides and a 34% decrease in non-fatal shootings. (baltimorepolice.org) We need to continue to advocate to reduce gun violence and oppose policies that could lead to an increase in violence in our neighborhoods.

Tell Congress to oppose unregulated concealed weapons.
The House Judiciary Committee recently advanced a dangerous bill that would allow nearly anyone to carry a concealed and loaded gun, regardless of state and local laws. H.R.38 and S.65 would enact “constitutional” carry, also known as permitless carry, meaning that individuals do not have to undergo a background check, licensing, or training before carrying a concealed weapon.

Demand that funding be restored for Violence Intervention Programs.
On April 22, the Department of Justice abruptly cancelled more than 360 ongoing grants totaling more than $800 million issued by the Office of Justice Programs for community violence intervention work around the country, including programs credited with contributing to Baltimore’s dramatic reduction in homicides. These cuts to critical public health programs risk destroying progress made on reducing gun violence in Baltimore and around the country.
