Living on the Margins

When you hear the term living on the margins, what does that mean to you?

When I think of the phrase “living on the margins,” I picture a playground. Most kids are playing on the basketball court or the monkey bars (I would personally be on the swings), but there is one child sitting alone on a bench at the edge of the park.

For some reason, she has slipped through the cracks. She faces incredible challenges every day. She is getting by, but merely surviving, not thriving. No one seems to notice her struggles or triumphs.

In my suburban family home, close-knit college campus, and uptown internship, I haven’t had many encounters with those living on the margins. I want to get off the swings, meet people where they are, walk with them on their journey, live by, and work with them.
